The Shawville arena hosted the local minor hockey association’s home closer this past Saturday, packing out the venue for most of the day.
SDMHA first vice-president Edward Rusenstrom said this year the association decided to host a formal closing event to the regular season, noting it was a fundraiser for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), specifically for diabetes. He said that his son Irving made a donation to the organization in the summer (see our Sept. 9 edition) and the family had kept in touch.
“So back in August my son cut his hair and donated it to CHEO,” he said. “The contacts we made down there, I talked to them that night about the potential of doing something with minor hockey and they were on board with it so we stayed in touch and we decided this one would go towards the diabetes unit, for youth diabetes. In the last couple years, some of our players from the SDMHA have been diagnosed.”
In addition to the teams competing to raise money amongst themselves, there was also a table in the lobby where attendees could make donations. He added that they were hoping to continue the partnership for future events.
“Today was basically a trial run for us to see what works, what doesn’t work, and what we can do in the future to make it better,” he said. “We plan to try this again, maybe at another SDMHA event next winter or next fall and see how it goes.”
Rusenstrom said that having the municipality’s winter carnival just outside was a help with all the added foot traffic.
“It worked out nicely, with the town having their carnival today, there were lots of people around all day, so it was actually really nice,” he added.
In total, the day brought in $1,650 for CHEO.

L’aréna de Shawville a accueilli l’événement de clôture de saison à domicile de l’association locale de hockey mineur samedi dernier, remplissant les lieux pendant la majeure partie de la journée.
Edward Rusenstrom, premier vice-président de la SDMHA, a déclaré que cette année, l’association avait décidé d’organiser un événement de clôture officiel pour la saison régulière, précisant qu’il s’agissait d’une collecte de fonds pour le Centre hospitalier pour enfants de l’est de l’Ontario (CHEO), spécifiquement pour le diabète. Il a mentionné que son fils Irving avait fait un don à l’organisme au cours de l’été (voir notre édition du 9 septembre) et que la famille était restée en contact.
« Donc, en août dernier, mon fils a coupé ses cheveux et en a fait don au CHEO », a-t-il dit. « Les contacts que nous avons établis là-bas, je leur ai parlé ce soir-là du potentiel de faire quelque chose avec le hockey mineur et ils étaient partants, alors nous sommes restés en contact et nous avons décidé que cet événement irait à l’unité de diabète, pour le diabète juvénile. Au cours des deux dernières années, certains de nos joueurs de la SDMHA ont été diagnostiqués. »
En plus des équipes qui concouraient pour amasser des fonds entre elles, il y avait aussi une table dans le hall où les participants pouvaient faire des dons. Il a ajouté qu’ils espéraient poursuivre le partenariat pour de futurs événements.
« Aujourd’hui, c’était essentiellement un essai pour nous, afin de voir ce qui fonctionne, ce qui ne fonctionne pas, et ce que nous pourrons faire à l’avenir pour améliorer les choses », a-t-il dit. « Nous prévoyons de tenter l’expérience à nouveau, peut-être lors d’un autre événement de la SDMHA l’hiver prochain ou l’automne prochain, et voir comment ça se passe. »
M. Rusenstrom a déclaré que la tenue du carnaval d’hiver de la municipalité juste à l’extérieur avait aidé grâce à l’afflux de visiteurs supplémentaires.
« Ça a bien fonctionné, avec le carnaval de la ville aujourd’hui, il y avait beaucoup de gens toute la journée, donc c’était vraiment bien », a-t-il ajouté.
Au total, la journée a permis d’amasser 1 650 $ pour le CHEO.
