History of The Equity

Founding and Early Beginnings: Established in 1883 by John Cowan and Henry Thomas Smith, The Equity was born out of a desire to present conservative viewpoints in the Pontiac region. Originally based in Bryson, Quebec, the first issue hit the stands on June 7, 1883, offering local news at a subscription price of one dollar per year.
Move to Shawville and Ownership Transitions: In 1888, The Equity relocated to Shawville, Quebec, a move that marked a new chapter in its history. The newspaper was managed by the Cowan family until 1948, after which it was briefly overseen by trustees. In 1950, Bill Kinmond and Chris Alexander took over, before selling it to David and Rosaleen Dickson in 1953. The Dickson family has remained at the helm ever since.
Advancements in Printing Technology: The Equity has witnessed and embraced numerous technological advancements. Initially produced using moveable type, the newspaper transitioned to the Linotype machine, revolutionizing the printing process. By the late 1960s, offset printing technology was adopted, allowing for more efficient production. In the 1990s, the shift to digital formatting marked another significant leap forward.
Commitment to Community: Throughout its history, The Equity has been a steadfast advocate for the local community. It has covered important local events and consistently supported the rights of the English-speaking minority in Quebec. The newspaper has played a pivotal role in various community initiatives, including the establishment of CHIP Radio Pontiac and Ottawa Freenet.
Modern Era and Digital Presence: Today, The Equity continues to serve as a crucial source of news and information for the Pontiac region. Despite the challenges facing print media, The Equity has adapted by creating a robust online presence.
Celebrating Milestones: As The Equity celebrated its 140th anniversary in 2023, it reaffirmed its commitment to delivering local news and preserving the community’s voice. With a rich history and a forward-looking approach, The Equity stands as a testament to the enduring importance of local journalism in the Pontiac region.
