A young Quyon girl may soon have a medical device to help her breathe easier thanks to the generosity of her community.
On Saturday, more than 80 people participated in a poker run in support of Ava Baron, 5, who has cystic fibrosis. The disease is genetic and causes mucus to accumulate in the afflicted person’s lungs, and can also cause issues with the intestines, liver and kidneys.
Ava’s family is looking to purchase a percussion vest, a device which vibrates the user’s chest in order to loosen up mucus in the users lungs, allowing them to clear their airways and breathe easier.
In total, the day brought in $5,352 towards the vest. Ava’s father Marc Baron said that he was blown away by the support from the people of Quyon.
“The fact that the community is that involved and willing to help anybody who’s in need, it’s a miracle really,” he said.
Baron said that the vests are typically in the range of $15,000 new, but said they were looking into refurbished ones online for a more affordable price.
Organizer Paul Desjardins said that when he heard about the family and their goal to get a vest, he wanted to help. Having organized poker runs for various organizations in the past, he got the family’s permission and got down to business.
“When I heard it was a friend of mine’s niece, I said ‘Ok, I’m going to organize a poker run,’” he said. “It was all put together in about 24 hours.”
Desjardins thanked the numerous sponsors, as well as his wife Elizabeth, for their help making the event a success. He added that Gavans Hotel, the start and end point of the run, provided the spaghetti supper for the group as well. The route took participants from Quyon up to the Legion in Campbell’s Bay, to Scooters Bar and Grill in Otter Lake, down to the Ladysmith Hotel and back to Quyon.
Desjardins said that he hoped the money would help Ava and her family get the tools they need to help her breathe easier.
“I don’t know how they’re going to do it but it gets them on their way,” he said. “I’m happy, very good turnout.”
Ava’s mother Britney Lloyd was wiping away tears as the cheque was presented, and thanked her neighbours for their generosity.
“We’re eternally grateful for everything. It’s overwhelming,” she said.
First place was won by Pete Erwin, second went to Donald McCann and third was Jeff Young. The 50/50 of $1,582 was won by Pamela Malette.

Cette maladie génétique provoque l’accumulation de mucus dans les poumons de la personne atteinte et peut également causer des problèmes au niveau des intestins, du foie et des reins.
La famille d’Ava cherche à acheter une veste de percussion, un appareil qui fait vibrer la poitrine de l’utilisateur afin de décoller le mucus dans les poumons, lui permettant de dégager ses voies respiratoires et de mieux respirer.
Au total, la journée a permis d’amasser 5 352 $ pour la veste. Le père d’Ava, Marc Baron, s’est dit sidéré par le soutien des habitants de Quyon.
« Le fait que la communauté soit aussi impliquée et prête à aider quiconque en a besoin, c’est vraiment un miracle », a-t-il déclaré.
M. Baron a indiqué que les vestes neuves coûtent généralement environ 15 000 $, mais qu’ils examinaient des modèles remis à neuf en ligne pour un prix plus abordable.
L’organisateur Paul Desjardins a expliqué que lorsqu’il a entendu parler de la famille et de son objectif d’acquérir une veste, il a voulu aider. Ayant déjà organisé des rallyes poker pour diverses organisations par le passé, il a obtenu la permission de la famille et s’est mis au travail.
« Quand j’ai appris que c’était la nièce d’un ami, j’ai dit : “Ok, je vais organiser un rallye poker” », a-t-il raconté. « Tout a été mis en place en environ 24 heures. »
M. Desjardins a remercié les nombreux commanditaires, ainsi que son épouse Elizabeth, pour leur aide dans la réussite de l’événement. Il a ajouté que l’hôtel Gavans, point de départ et d’arrivée de la course, a également fourni le souper spaghetti pour le groupe. Le parcours a mené les participants de Quyon jusqu’à la Légion de Campbell’s Bay, au Scooters Bar and Grill d’Otter Lake, jusqu’à l’hôtel Ladysmith et de retour à Quyon.
M. Desjardins a dit qu’il espérait que l’argent aiderait Ava et sa famille à obtenir les outils dont elles ont besoin pour l’aider à mieux respirer.
« Je ne sais pas comment ils vont y arriver, mais ça les met sur la bonne voie », a-t-il déclaré. « Je suis content, très bonne participation. »
La mère d’Ava, Britney Lloyd, essuyait des larmes au moment de la présentation du chèque et a remercié ses voisins pour leur générosité.
« Nous sommes éternellement reconnaissants pour tout. C’est bouleversant », a-t-elle affirmé.
La première place a été remportée par Pete Erwin, la deuxième par Donald McCann et la troisième par Jeff Young. Le 50/50 de 1 582 $ a été remporté par Pamela Malette.
