On July 13, around 80 people from the Pontiac and beyond gathered at Pontefract Golf Club in Mansfield et Pontefract for the eighth annual charity golf tournament in support of Incendie Mansfield.

Hosted by local resident Claudette Pleau, the event served as an opportunity for local golfers to hit the links with friends for a round of nine holes while raising money for the local fire department.

According to Pleau, the event is a very important personal endeavour considering the relationship she has with the volunteer firefighters at the Mansfield fire department.

Married to one of the firefighters and having been involved with the department and its numerous activities and fundraisers for nearly 40 years, Pleau has formed a bond with many of them that makes them feel close to family.

That’s why it’s imperative for her to help them out in any way she can.

“I’ve always participated in their events,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to raise funds for them because they’re my little babies. I think it’s worth the effort to raise funds for them to buy new equipment.”

With 80 golfers participating, some coming from as far as Gatineau and the Ottawa Valley, the tournament consisted of a four-man best ball.

Divided into two categories of men’s and mixed, the atmosphere was as far from competitive as one could imagine, as flawless fairway drives were few and far between and lots of puts were needed to get through each hole.

On the second hole, a par 3, a tent was set up where participants gave their best shot at $9,000 worth of gas by sinking a hole in one. Unfortunately, no one managed to get it done.

At the end of the round, participants gathered inside the clubhouse up the hill for an informal awards banquet accompanied with a buffet-style supper catered by local restaurant J&A Bowers, with all sorts of hot and cold delicacies to feast on.

In the men’s category, the winning team was composed of Serge Duval, Eric Jolin, Daniel Romain and Marc Patry. For the mixed category winners were Nicole Gervais, Marc Ladouceur, Doug Rose and Rachel Garvey.

Plus, with three special draws taking place, a few contestants were lucky enough to walk away with either a sum of money or a big chunk of meat, as Randy Boucher raffled off $300, while Robert Junior Denault and Michel Fortin each went home with half a pork loin, Pleau said.

In total, the event raised over $6,200 all of which will go towards purchasing two Scott Air Packs with removable tanks for the fire department, Pleau said.
