PONTIAC Nov. 5, 2017
On Nov. 5, as citizens of the Pontiac exercised their right to vote for municipal leaders, a local organization worked to ensure even those with mobility issues could make it to the ballot box.
TransporAction director Sylvie Bertrand explained that they offer their specialized transport services during every election season and this year a handful of residents took them up on the offer.
“We had a few call to book,” she said. “It’s mostly for people in wheelchairs.”
Residents were required to book a ride 48 hours in advance and were shuttled directly to and from their local polling station.
“We had sent a memo to all the municipalities offering them our service,” she said, adding that they served clients across the breadth of the region, from Breckenridge to Chapeau.
Bertrand explained that she sees transportation of those with mobility issues as a vital service.
“I find it’s very important because it’s their right to go and vote,” she said. “For us, it’s necessary to offer [this service] to them because if they have no way of voting, that’s not fair. They’re still important for our community, for our area.”
