SHAWVILLE Feb. 24 2022

The Pontiac Panthers played their first basketball game since the most recent round of COVID-19 restrictions began to lift Thursday night.

The Panthers basketball program features three teams this season. Feb. 24 the juvenile (senior) girls and juvenile (senior) boys returned to play in a double-header match-up hosted by PHS.

In Thursday night’s matchups, the juvenile boys defeated . . .

Érabliere with a score of 34-26. When asked to comment on the team’s success, Coach Jodi Thompson, shared that “It is great to see the guys together and working hard. Not only are we doing extremely well, but we are also having a lot of fun. With the mid-season shut down, it has made getting back into sports a little difficult, but we were able to win and look forward to finishing the season strong.” The next game for the juvenile boys will be on March 14 when they visit Du Versant.

With a 22-17 victory over Nicolas-Gatineau, Coach Matt Greer was eager to praise the performance of the juvenile girls team. “It was great to be back in the gym coaching basketball again. The girls played with enthusiasm and energy; you could tell that they were excited to be back on the court together playing for the Panthers. Our seniors really stepped up to the plate for us, in what could be their last “home court” competition playing for PHS. They made sure to leave a mark for the next generation of athletes.” The next game for the juvenile girls will be on March 10 when they visit Philemon Wright.

When asked to comment on the return of basketball to PHS, Grade 10 student Peyton Ireland, shared that, “it’s great to be able to play sports with the school again.” Similarly, Grade 11 student Justine Tanguay, shared, “I am happy to be finishing my high school years at PHS by playing sports. I’ve missed the extras that our school offers.”

The next few games for the juvenile rosters will determine their regular season standings.

“The return to play had our athletes excited to move towards some sense of normalcy.” said Greer. “The energy students and fans brought really helped propel our team to a key victory leading into the last stretch of the season. With playoffs on the line, our senior athletes (Meredith Barr, Kassandra Demers, Mackenzie Barr, Justine Tanguay & Ireland Hodgins) did an amazing job of leading our team with not only their on court play, but showing the next generation how to best represent the Panther logo.”
