WALTHAM June 9, 2020

Volunteers will once again be searching the Ottawa River this coming weekend to recover the body of missing Allumette Island man and they’re looking for help . . .

Robert Chartrand, 30, went into the water while snowmobiling near the Chapeau bridge on Feb. 12. He is presumed deceased after his helmet and snowmobile were recovered by searchers along with tracks leading to open water, but his body has not yet been recovered.

An unsanctioned search has been scheduled for June 12, with anyone interested in participating asked to meet at the Waltham docks at 9 a.m. An organizer told The Equity that though they had been focusing a lot of their previous searches in the area between the bridge and Waltham, they would be expanding further towards the Fort Coulonge area. They said cottagers arriving for the summer might not know about Chartrand and should keep their eyes peeled anywhere down river.

At the time he went into the water, Chartrand was wearing a black and orange jacket and tan Carhartt work pants.

Anyone who finds something suspect in the river or on the shore is advised to contact police.

A memorial fund in Robert’s name has been established to support future community sports and events. Donation can be made at the Caisse Populaire Dejardins in Chapeau (account #107171) or by e-transfer to robertchartrandmemorial@gmail.com
