On Fri., Jan. 17, the Quyon Community Association hosted their first event of the year, as they put on a Trivia Night with a Sesquicentennial theme at Gavan’s Hotel. Participants enjoyed a fun evening of answering an array of questions featuring Canadiana and Quyon history, as well as snacking on delicious sharing boards and munchie platters served up by the staff at Gavan’s. It was a great turnout, with 19 teams of four filling the lounge to take on the challenge. After a strong final round of identifying audio clips from Canadian television programs, my team “Chris & The Youngsters” took home the big win. There was also a $150 donation made to the Quyon Family Centre, and a huge selection of awesome door prizes ensured that everyone went home with a prize. We had such a fun evening, and we hope all of the teams did as well. A big shout-out to the QCA and to Gavan’s Hotel for putting on this event. We are looking forward to more upcoming occasions to celebrate Quyon’s 150th.

The Quyon Pastoral Charge also added to the 150th fun by opening the time capsule that was sealed in Jan. 2000, at church on Sunday morning. The service began with Chair of the Board Chris Provost inviting the children to come forward and help him reveal what was in the Time Capsule. This was a project initiated by Laurie MacKechnie to celebrate the year 2000, as congregation members put in mementos and historical items at the time, with the intention of it to be opened in 25 years. There were old church annual reports, video tapes of past church Sunday School pageants and Christmas Eve services, copies of the Ottawa Citizen, THE EQUITY, the TV Times, and the United Church Observer, as well as photos, letters from congregation members, and much more. It was nice to have many church members, both past and present, in attendance who recall putting items in the time capsule, as well as members of Laurie MacKechnie’s family there to honour his project for the church and see it to completion. The congregation is already looking forward to putting together another time capsule to celebrate Quyon’s 150th this year.

Birthday wishes are going out to Dave Keogh on Jan. 22, and to Kenny Fleck and Jaime Cote, both celebrating on the 24th. Happy birthday also to Lisa Nugent on the 26th, and to Sue Chabot on the 27th. Blessings to all who are marking special occasions this week.

After a mild spell on Saturday, the deep freeze has hit now, which should bode well for winter enthusiasts. We could use a little more snow for the snowmobilers, I’m sure, but at least the cold is great for those who like to ice fish and skate. As someone who loves winter, it always makes me happy to see folks out enjoying it.
