Commuters looking for a quick snack on the way home from the city now have a familiar option along Mountain Road.
Just over the municipal line in Chelsea, the newest location of Langford’s Grocery opened for business on March 26. This comes relatively hot on the heels of the chain’s expansion to Campbell’s Bay in December 2016.
Owner Mazhar-Iqbal Dar, known to most in the area simply as Tony, said that he had been interested in the property at 141 Chemin de la Montagne for several years, but the proprietor wasn’t ready to sell at the time.
Manager Gabrielle Rochon said that they began the process of acquiring the new location in August.
She said that many people from the area commute to the city along this route.
“To Gatineau for sure, it’s pretty busy in the morning,” she said.
Dar added that there are many homes slated to be built in the surrounding area, which is a promising sign.
“Even if you don’t have those houses you still have enough for a small corner store … They have nothing,” he said. “If you get back to your home at four or five, you don’t want to go all the way back to the city, you’re just going to go to the corner store.”
Store hours are currently 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week.
The pair explained that though they’re currently waiting on some permits, they will be expanding to fill the first floor of the building. In addition to the responsibilities of the new store, Rochon will continue to manage the main Langford’s location on Victoria Street.
“Shawville will still be her headache,” Dar joked.
While it was still early in the first day, several locals popped in to greet the new proprietors. Both said it was great to have a service like this in the area.
When asked whether he is already considering more locations, Dar smiled and looked to Rochon.
“If she wants to take more responsibility, I will go for it,” he said . “She’s doing an awesome job, so there’s a possibility.”
