Several residents got some free cross-country skiing lessons at Pine Lodge on March 1, as part of an initiative put on by the Pontiac Maison des Jeunes and the Ski at School program. Skiing lessons are offered throughout the week, at different locations throughout the region. Public health measures like household bubbles and distancing will be enforced.

The Pontiac Maison des Jeunes (MDJ) are offering a chance for Pontiac residents to get out of the house this March break and beyond.

In coordination with a host of other local non-profits and organizations, such as MRC Pontiac, Ski at School, Loisir Sport Outaouais and others, the group will be offering a host of . . .

different activities for youngsters on a break from school and adults as well.

MDJ coordinator Desiree Tremblay Giroux explained that they were offering free cross-country skiing lessons at different locations throughout the Pontiac, from Monday to Thursday. The classes were spread out throughout the day to comply with public health guidelines.

“With this COVID and planning any activities or services for the public has been a roller coaster and a challenge,” she said. “You really have to think out of the box and be on your toes and be able to do whatever you can.”

In addition, they have a library of outdoor gear that’s free to loan out, from ice skates to hockey helmets and sliding equipment. The lessons and equipment can be booked by calling 819-209-7626 or emailing mdjdesiree@gmail.com. Tremblay Giroux noted that the equipment will be available beyond the school break, as long as there is snow on the ground. It is available throughout the region, and can be delivered if needed.

In addition, the MDJ is also holding a contest for those that do take to the outdoors this week. Winners will receive gift certificates to various Pontiac businesses.

“To get people to get outside and moving instead of being in their homes and being on the screens, we want people to get physically active or just get outside and get some fresh air,” Tremblay Giroux explained.

“They have to do three different winter activities and then send in the photos, [it] opened Saturday and will close this Friday,” she continued. “We will pick three winners from a random draw.”
