On Feb. 17, families and residents in Thorne gathered at the Thorne Commmunity Recreation Association (TCRA) Hall in Ladysmith for a day of indoor and outdoor activities.
The annual Family Fun Day is a longstanding tradition in the community, bringing everyone together for some socializing during the dreary winter months.
There was snow painting and games for the young children, snowshoeing, skating and sleigh rides courtesy of Shawn Pulley of 710 Excursions. Inside there was plenty of food and a chili cookoff with seven entries.

Organizer and newly-elected Thorne councillor Megane Bretzlaff explained that she and fellow council member Jammie-Lee Thrun took over the reigns from Essie Schwartz.
“It’s our first year this year, just Jammie and I,” she said. “Essie has been doing it for the last couple years.”
Schwartz was unsure of how many years the event has been running but estimated it surpassed a decade.
“I was on [council] for eight years and they had it before that,” she said.
Bretzlaff thanked everyone that volunteered their time to make the event a success.
“A lot of them are from the TCRA, a lot from council and we have a few other volunteers as well,” she said.
The winner of the highly competitive chili cookoff was Trina Hodgins.
