The nomination period for the upcoming byelection in Chichester is officially closed, with three candidates having put their names forward to run in the race for the seat 4 councillor: Karolann Fleming, Jeremiah Nephin, and Caroline Sheppard.
The seat was left vacant when councillor Chrissy Payne resigned from the position in July to pursue a new opportunity in Toronto. She was in her second term, elected by acclamation in both 2021 and 2025.
The Municipality of Chichester hasn’t seen this kind of candidate turnout for a councillor seat in at least the last two general elections.
In the 2021 municipal elections, all six outgoing councillors were elected by acclamation. In the 2025 general election, five of six councillors were elected by acclamation, all of them having already filled a seat for at least a term prior. Seat 6 saw two candidates after outgoing councillor Neil Maloney decided not to run again.
The advance vote for seat 4 will be Sept. 13 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., and election day will be Sept. 20. from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voting will take place at town hall, located at 75 rue Notre-Dame in Chapeau.
Eligible electors who live outside the municipality and wish to vote by mail, or who wish to vote from their home or their room at a recognized healthcare facility must apply to do so by Sept. 8, 2026.

Lors des élections générales de 2025, cinq des six conseillers ont été élus par acclamation, tous ayant déjà occupé un siège pendant au moins un mandat auparavant. Le siège n° 6 a vu deux candidats après que le conseiller sortant Neil Maloney a décidé de ne pas se représenter.
Le vote par anticipation pour le siège n° 4 aura lieu le 13 sept. de 12 h à 20 h, et le jour du scrutin sera le 20 sept. de 10 h à 20 h. Le vote aura lieu à l’hôtel de ville, situé au 75, rue Notre-Dame à Chapeau.
Les électeurs admissibles qui vivent à l’extérieur de la municipalité et souhaitent voter par correspondance, ou qui souhaitent voter depuis leur domicile ou leur chambre dans un établissement de santé reconnu, doivent en faire la demande avant le 8 septembre 2026.
