Over the weekend, the Chutes Coulonge Park in Mansfield-etPontefract hosted its second annual Lumberjack Festival.
The weekend kicked off with a comedy night at Cinema Lyn headlined by Derek Seguin. Organizer Brittany Morin said that they wanted to offer the community something interesting.
“The park’s in a development phase so we are looking to find creative ways of doing fundraisers but also that are light and nice for the community to enjoy that are different from other things that are happening,” she said. “I found a comedian through shows I’ve been to that was willing to come down and do a fundraiser show for the benefit of the park.”
The following day at the Chutes property there were a variety of activities, including several shows by the Great Canadian Lumberjacks, live music and a log race down the falls.
“Last year we decided to have a fall event. We knew that other partner organizations had Halloween covered and we thought why not lean into the history of the park and do a lumberjack day festival,” Morin said. “It was just a natural fit, easy to pull together. The community seems to love it.”
She said that the park is looking to develop its infrastructure to expand its offerings to more seasons.
“So the immediate projects we’re fundraising for now are the fall trail project, we’re going to build on our fall trail network and we’re going to do more interpretation of our flora and fauna, and we’re also going to expand winter activities,” she said.
Morin added that they are currently adding a new sanitation building that will feature six bathrooms, a family bathroom and accessible showers.
“The park is growing so much that the two bathrooms we have on site from the original days of the park are just not enough to sustain the flow of visitors,“ she said.
Morin thanked the numerous sponsors that made the event possible.

Le week-end a débuté avec une soirée d’humour au Cinéma Lyn, mettant en vedette Derek Seguin. L’organisatrice, Brittany Morin, a déclaré qu’ils voulaient offrir quelque chose d’intéressant à la communauté.
« Le parc est en phase de développement, nous cherchons donc des façons créatives de faire des collectes de fonds, mais aussi des activités légères et agréables pour que la communauté puisse en profiter, et qui soient différentes de ce qui se passe ailleurs », a-t-elle expliqué. « J’ai trouvé un humoriste lors de spectacles auxquels j’avais assisté, et il était prêt à venir faire un spectacle-bénéfice au profit du parc. »
Le lendemain, sur la propriété des Chutes, diverses activités ont eu lieu, dont plusieurs spectacles des Great Canadian Lumberjacks, de la musique en direct et une course de billots dans les chutes.
« L’an dernier, nous avons décidé d’organiser un événement automnal. Nous savions que d’autres organisations partenaires s’occupaient de l’Halloween, et nous nous sommes dit : pourquoi ne pas nous inspirer de l’histoire du parc et organiser un festival des bûcherons? », a déclaré Mme Morin. « C’était tout simplement un choix naturel, facile à organiser. La communauté semble l’adorer. »
Elle a précisé que le parc cherche à développer ses infrastructures pour élargir son offre à plus de saisons.
« Les projets immédiats pour lesquels nous recueillons des fonds sont le projet de sentier d’automne, nous allons développer notre réseau de sentiers d’automne et nous allons faire plus d’interprétation de notre flore et de notre faune, et nous allons également développer les activités hivernales », a-t-elle mentionné.
Mme Morin a ajouté qu’ils sont en train d’ajouter un nouveau bâtiment sanitaire qui comprendra six salles de bain, une salle de bain familiale et des douches accessibles.
« Le parc connaît une telle croissance que les deux salles de bain que nous avons sur place depuis les débuts du parc ne suffisent tout simplement plus à soutenir le flux de visiteurs », a-t-elle affirmé.
Mme Morin a remercié les nombreux commanditaires qui ont rendu l’événement possible.
