The Shawville Pontiacs kept their winning streak going on Friday night with a home matchup against the South Stormont Mustangs, who they beat 7-4 in a back and forth game.
Coach Darcy Findlay said that the Mustangs are the powerhouse of their division, with players that bring a lot of speed.
“It’s a big win in my eyes,” he said. “It’s two points that not a lot of people are going to get this year.”
The visitors came out hot with a lot of pressure in the first period, though the Pontiacs weathered the storm and Christian Berini managed to get one by South Stormont’s goalie with just over two minutes left to go.
The scoring picked up in the second, with Shawville netting two goals in the first half of the period, and had another disallowed due to an icing call. South Stormont wasn’t going to leave empty-handed however, and they battled back with three goals of their own in the final five minutes of the frame, with the Pontiacs adding one as well.
“Our guys played well, skated well,” Findlay said. “I was impressed with our work ethic and just matching the intensity and skill level.”
Shawville rookie Julien Arruda opened up the third period with an early goal, his second of the night. With just over two minutes left, Jean-Philippe Caron beat South Stormont’s defence to an open net and put the home team up by three. Not willing to go quietly, the Mustangs managed to get one back just under a minute later. A final empty-netter from Brendan St-Louis with three seconds left on the clock put an end to the scoring at 7-4 for the Pontiacs.
Veteran goaltender Danick Boisvert was awarded the first star of the game for his shot-stopping efforts, and Arruda got the second star for his two goals and an assist.
“Danick played really well, I think he ended up with a little over 40 shots in the game, a lot of them early and a lot of them late,” Findlay said. “You’ve got to be sharp early on to keep us in until we score [ . . . ] He made some big saves that kept momentum going in our favour. And Julien had a great game with a couple goals, he’s been really good for us. As a guy with no experience in the league, he stepped in and is playing on the top line.”
The Pontiacs will be on the road for the next few weekends, taking on the Arnprior Rivermen in Deep River, Ont. on Oct. 25, and defending league champions, the North Dundas Rockets on Nov. 1.
“The key for us is to not take Arnprior lightly, I know they haven’t won yet this year but they haven’t necessarily had their entire roster either,” Findlay said. “Next week we play North Dundas, who’s won the league I don’t know how many years in a row [ . . . ] It’s a big test for us to match up against them, see how we do.”
The Shawville Pontiacs’ next home game will be Nov. 7 against the South Grenville Rangers.
Les Pontiacs de Shawville ont poursuivi leur série de victoires vendredi soir lors d’un match à domicile contre les Mustangs de South Stormont, qu’ils ont battus 7-4 dans un match chaudement disputé.
L’entraîneur Darcy Findlay a déclaré que les Mustangs sont la puissance de leur division, avec des joueurs qui apportent beaucoup de vitesse.

Les visiteurs ont démarré en force avec beaucoup de pression en première période, mais les Pontiacs ont résisté à la tempête et Christian Berini a réussi à en mettre un derrière le gardien de South Stormont avec un peu plus de deux minutes à faire.
Le pointage a repris de plus belle en deuxième période, avec Shawville marquant deux buts dans la première moitié de la période, et un autre refusé en raison d’un dégagement refusé. South Stormont n’allait cependant pas repartir les mains vides, et ils ont riposté avec trois buts de leur cru dans les cinq dernières minutes de la période, les Pontiacs en ajoutant un aussi.
« Nos gars ont bien joué, ont bien patiné, a dit Findlay. J’ai été impressionné par notre éthique de travail et par notre capacité à égaler l’intensité et le niveau de compétence. »
La recrue des Pontiacs, Julien Arruda, a ouvert la troisième période avec un but rapide, son deuxième de la soirée. Avec un peu plus de deux minutes à faire, Jean-Philippe Caron a déjoué la défense de South Stormont pour marquer dans un filet ouvert et a donné une avance de trois buts à l’équipe locale. Ne voulant pas s’incliner sans combattre, les Mustangs ont réussi à en marquer un en retour moins d’une minute plus tard. Un dernier but dans un filet désert de Brendan St-Louis avec trois secondes à faire au cadran a mis fin au pointage à 7-4 pour les Pontiacs.
Le gardien de but vétéran Danick Boisvert a été nommé première étoile du match pour ses efforts d’arrêt de tirs, et Arruda a obtenu la deuxième étoile pour ses deux buts et une passe.
« Danick a très bien joué, je crois qu’il a terminé avec un peu plus de 40 tirs dans le match, beaucoup au début et beaucoup à la fin, a dit Findlay. Il faut être vif dès le début pour nous maintenir dans le match jusqu’à ce que nous marquions [ . . . ] Il a fait de gros arrêts qui ont maintenu l’élan en notre faveur. Et Julien a fait un excellent match avec quelques buts, il a été très bon pour nous. Pour un gars sans expérience dans la ligue, il a pris sa place et joue sur la première ligne. »
Les Pontiacs seront sur la route pour les prochains week-ends, affrontant les Rivermen d’Arnprior à Deep River, en Ontario, le 25 octobre, et les champions en titre de la ligue, les Rockets de North Dundas, le 1er novembre.
« La clé pour nous est de ne pas prendre Arnprior à la légère, je sais qu’ils n’ont pas encore gagné cette année, mais ils n’ont pas non plus eu nécessairement toute leur équipe, a dit Findlay. La semaine prochaine, nous jouons contre North Dundas, qui a remporté la ligue je ne sais combien d’années d’affilée [ . . . ] C’est un grand test pour nous de les affronter, de voir comment nous nous en sortons. »
Le prochain match à domicile des Pontiacs de Shawville aura lieu le 7 novembre contre les Rangers de South Grenville.
