To celebrate the Municipality of Otter Lake’s 150th anniversary, local crafters are putting together a wall hanging with 20 quilt-like squares depicting the community’s spirit. Once completed, the piece will be displayed at the town hall.
Otter Lake 150 committee co-chair Donna Cushman said that they were devoting some time to the project during their usual Thursday morning crafting session at the Raymond Johnston Community Centre, though folks can also submit pieces they’ve worked on solo.
“We’re in the process of inviting community members to come in and create a square that represents something that’s important to them in Otter Lake, or what Otter Lake means to them,” she said. “It could be something from the nature world, it could be a building, it could be an activity.”
Beverly Kluke and Phyllis Dubeau were at the hall on Feb. 12 working on a square depicting the St. James Anglican Church.
“We’re really hoping that the rest of the community, when they see what’s going on and have a better understanding, are going to come out and do a square,” Cushman said. “We’ve got 20 squares, so far I think, seven have been spoken for, so 13 left.”
She said that the committee is planning to have the community quilt finished in time for a heritage and harvest dinner that they have planned for late September.

Pour célébrer le 150e anniversaire de la Municipalité d’Otter Lake, des artisans locaux assemblent une tenture murale composée de 20 carrés de type courtepointe dépeignant l’esprit de la communauté. Une fois terminée, l’œuvre sera exposée à l’hôtel de ville.
La coprésidente du comité Otter Lake 150, Donna Cushman, a indiqué qu’ils consacraient du temps au projet lors de leur séance d’artisanat habituelle du jeudi matin au Centre communautaire Raymond Johnston, bien que les gens puissent également soumettre des pièces qu’ils ont réalisées seuls.
« Nous sommes en train d’inviter les membres de la communauté à venir créer un carré qui représente quelque chose d’important pour eux à Otter Lake, ou ce que Otter Lake signifie pour eux », a-t-elle déclaré. « Cela pourrait être quelque chose du monde de la nature, un bâtiment, ou une activité. »
Beverly Kluke et Phyllis Dubeau étaient à la salle le 12 février en train de travailler sur un carré représentant l’église anglicane St. James.
« Nous espérons vraiment que le reste de la communauté, lorsqu’elle verra ce qui se passe et comprendra mieux, viendra faire un carré », a dit Mme Cushman. « Nous avons 20 carrés, et jusqu’à présent, je pense que sept ont été réservés, il en reste donc 13. »
Elle a précisé que le comité prévoit d’avoir la courtepointe communautaire terminée à temps pour un souper du patrimoine et de la moisson qu’ils ont prévu pour la fin septembre.
