Thirteen teams played ball for a good cause over the weekend, facing off in the annual fundraiser tournament in support of Hockey Mineur Fort-Coulonge.
Teams competed for championships in three divisions. While the weather cooperated for games on Friday and Saturday, Sunday afternoon’s rain made the field a bit muddy.
But the teams played on. In the end, the A division was won by the Morrissette family, who defeated the perennial champion Corriveau team in a rain-soaked final. The B division final took three extra innings to determine a champion, but in the end it was the Ladouceur family who lifted the trophy. And finally, the Presseau family managed to edge out the Boucher family in the C division final.
Hockey Mineur president Paul Boisvert said the tournament has been around for around 20 years, adding that it usually brings in around $8,000, which the club uses to keep registration fees down for the kids.
“We try to raise $10,000 every year to keep the cost down for every parent by 90 bucks,” he said, adding that registration is $550 for the older age groups while the youngest age groups pay $350.
Boisvert said he was very pleased with the turnout this year, as he is every year, for the association’s biggest fundraiser throughout the year.
“Everything’s running really smoothly. Lots of volunteer help,” he said.
Boisvert said highlights of the past year in the association included an increase in registration by about 15 players. He tacked on a congratulations for the U13 A Comets team who qualified for the provincial championships in Laval, earning second place.
“It’s a small town team going up to Laval for the weekend and losing in the finals. It was a nice thing for the kids, that’s for sure,” he said.
Debby Ladouceur, captain of the B division champion Ladouceur family, said while her kids have not traditionally played minor hockey the family still puts in a team year after year.
“We have always supported the tournament for youth hockey, to help the community. But also to play ball with my dad and family to have fun. That’s what it’s all about,” she said, adding that her father Wilfrid Ladouceur is still playing at 77 years old.
Boisvert said that’s exactly the intention of the tournament, to bring families together for a fun weekend in support of minor hockey. He said it’s also fun to see some of the family rivalries at play throughout the weekend.
“Lots of families, they’re all cousins, so we try to make them play each other at least once during the weekend. You have to, it makes it fun.”
Boivert said the association will be hosting another fundraiser near the end of August, this time a best-ball golf tournament.

Les équipes se sont affrontées pour les championnats dans trois divisions. Alors que la météo a coopéré pour les matchs du vendredi et du samedi, la pluie de dimanche après-midi a rendu le terrain un peu boueux.
Mais les équipes ont continué de jouer. Au final, la division A a été remportée par la famille Morrissette, qui a vaincu l’équipe Corriveau, championne de longue date, lors d’une finale sous la pluie. La finale de la division B a nécessité trois manches supplémentaires pour déterminer un champion, mais au bout du compte, c’est la famille Ladouceur qui a soulevé le trophée. Et enfin, la famille Presseau a réussi à devancer la famille Boucher lors de la finale de la division C.
Le président de Hockey Mineur, Paul Boisvert, a déclaré que le tournoi existait depuis environ 20 ans, ajoutant qu’il rapporte habituellement environ 8 000 $, que le club utilise pour maintenir les frais d’inscription à la baisse pour les enfants.
« Nous essayons de recueillir 10 000 $ chaque année pour réduire le coût pour chaque parent de 90 dollars », a-t-il dit, ajoutant que l’inscription est de 550 $ pour les groupes d’âge plus âgés tandis que les groupes d’âge les plus jeunes paient 350 $.
M. Boisvert a déclaré qu’il était très satisfait de la participation cette année, comme chaque année, pour le plus grand événement de collecte de fonds de l’association tout au long de l’année.
« Tout se passe très bien. Beaucoup d’aide bénévole », a-t-il dit.
M. Boisvert a indiqué que les faits saillants de l’année écoulée au sein de l’association comprenaient une augmentation d’environ 15 joueurs inscrits. Il a également félicité l’équipe des Comètes U13 A qui s’est qualifiée pour les championnats provinciaux à Laval, obtenant la deuxième place.
« C’est une équipe d’une petite ville qui se rend à Laval pour le week-end et qui perd en finale. C’était une belle expérience pour les enfants, c’est certain », a-t-il dit.
Debby Ladouceur, capitaine de la famille Ladouceur, championne de la division B, a déclaré que même si ses enfants n’ont pas traditionnellement joué au hockey mineur, la famille monte toujours une équipe année après année.
« Nous avons toujours soutenu le tournoi pour le hockey des jeunes, pour aider la communauté. Mais aussi pour jouer au baseball avec mon père et ma famille et s’amuser. C’est ça l’essentiel », a-t-elle dit, ajoutant que son père, Wilfrid Ladouceur, joue toujours à 77 ans.
M. Boisvert a déclaré que c’était exactement l’intention du tournoi : réunir les familles pour un week-end amusant en soutien au hockey mineur. Il a ajouté qu’il était aussi amusant de voir certaines rivalités familiales en action tout au long du week-end.
« Beaucoup de familles sont toutes cousines, alors nous essayons de les faire jouer les unes contre les autres au moins une fois pendant le week-end. Il faut le faire, ça rend ça amusant. »
M. Boisvert a déclaré que l’association organisera une autre collecte de fonds vers la fin du mois d’août, cette fois-ci un tournoi de golf « best-ball ».
