The family of a young man from Île du Grand Calumet who died following a single vehicle collision in Chelsea last Saturday are raising awareness about the importance of organ donations.

Gaëtan Derouin, 21, was the son of Lucie Mutchmore and Jerry Derouin. He received severe injuries that ultimately . . .

ended his life in a single-vehicle accident that took place around 10 p.m. March 20 on chemin de la Montagne. The driver of the vehicle, Aramis Vigeant, 22, of Gatineau was also killed in the accident. A third occupant, age 20, was ejected from the vehicle but was not physically injured.

In an interview with Radio-Canada published on March 29, Mutchmore stated that Gaëtan had expressed to her his will to donate his organs six months prior to the crash. She said that his lungs, kidneys, liver and pancreas had been transplanted. His tissue was also donated, which could help an additional 50 people.

Mutchmore also said that helping people is what Gaëtan wanted to do and that it is comforting knowing that his organs can help people. According to the article, nearly 900 Quebecers are currently waiting for an organ donation.
