Last Wednesday night, the RA hall on l’Île-du-Grand-Calumet was filled with dozens of volunteers and their families for a barbecue and open mic night.
Marie-Jeanne Godin-McTiernan, the president of the community’s recreation association, explained that they typically hold a get-together to recognize their volunteers.
“We do a supper for our volunteers,” she said. “The ones that have helped out for the carnival, for all the events that we do throughout the year, for the Saint-Jean, which was a three-day thing this year. This is our way of thanking them for helping out.”
Godin-McTiernan said that they have a core group of nine on the RA committee but they had as many as 68 volunteers for their popular events like Saint-Jean-Baptiste. She added that anyone was welcome to the barbecue, but those who had helped out previously ate for free.
She said that the musical portion of the evening was put on by a musician with local roots, Jean Michel Lamothe, who had entertained for the group before. After warming up the crowd himself, he hosted an open mic night for whoever wanted to perform.
“He’s originally from the island, he now lives in Alberta, he works in Banff, he’s an entertainer,” she explained. “This is the second year that he’s sung for us for our volunteer supper. I said sure go ahead, try it out, because if it works out we can make this a yearly thing.”
Godin-McTiernan said that the RA is aiming to host a community picnic in September.
“We’re going to have an annual picnic that we are revamping, bringing back, because the island used to have picnics all the time.”
Mercredi soir dernier, la salle de l’AR sur l’Île-du-Grand-Calumet était remplie de dizaines de bénévoles et de leurs familles pour un barbecue et une soirée micro ouvert.
Marie-Jeanne Godin-McTiernan, la présidente de l’association récréative de la communauté, a expliqué qu’ils organisent généralement un rassemblement pour reconnaître leurs bénévoles.
« Nous faisons un souper pour nos bénévoles, a-t-elle dit. Ceux qui ont aidé pour le carnaval, pour tous les événements que nous organisons tout au long de l’année, pour la Saint-Jean, qui a duré trois jours cette année. C’est notre façon de les remercier de leur aide. »
Mme Godin-McTiernan a déclaré qu’ils ont un noyau de neuf personnes au sein du comité de l’AR, mais qu’ils avaient jusqu’à 68 bénévoles pour leurs événements populaires comme la Saint-Jean-Baptiste. Elle a ajouté que tout le monde était bienvenu au barbecue, mais ceux qui avaient déjà aidé mangeaient gratuitement.
Elle a dit que la partie musicale de la soirée était animée par un musicien aux racines locales, Jean Michel Lamothe, qui avait déjà diverti le groupe. Après avoir lui-même échauffé la foule, il a animé une soirée micro ouvert pour ceux qui voulaient se produire.
« Il est originaire de l’île, il vit maintenant en Alberta, il travaille à Banff, c’est un artiste, a-t-elle expliqué. C’est la deuxième année qu’il chante pour nous pour notre souper des bénévoles. Je lui ai dit d’essayer, parce que si ça marche, nous pourrons en faire une chose annuelle. »
Mme Godin-McTiernan a déclaré que l’AR vise à organiser un pique-nique communautaire en septembre.
« Nous allons avoir un pique-nique annuel que nous sommes en train de réorganiser, de ramener, parce que l’île avait l’habitude d’avoir des pique-niques tout le temps. »
