SHAWVILLE Dec. 6, 2017
The Anglican Church Hall in Shawville was filled on Dec. 6 as revelers participated in a long-standing local tradition.
According to President Laurie Howard, the Shawville Lionettes have been putting their Christmas Cheer Dinner on for 45 years. The meal serves as a way to bring out the shut-in and isolated residents of the community, who might not otherwise get a chance to indulge in turkey and stuffing.
Howard said that 18 Lionettes, along with a few helpful Lions, were put to the task of providing food for over 100 guests.
“We prepare all the food and serve most of it,” she said. “There’s a few from the Lions Club … they come and they help us out, do dishes and clean up.”
With a full spread of holiday fare, it’s clear why there was nary an empty seat throughout the hall.
Howard was pleased with the turnout and said that the event is just one of the ways that the club gives back to the people of Shawville.
“We just do it for the community, there’s no charge involved,” she said.
After the meal was over, attendees were treated to a visit from the man in the big, red suit.
