The body of a Chapeau man was recovered from the Ottawa River near Allumettes Island on June 11. Police were called to a section of the river near Allumettes Island, where civilians had spotted the body at around 9:45 a.m.

“The body was transported to Montreal for a positive ID, it could take some time because we weren’t able to ID the person right away,” said Sûreté Du Québec spokesperson Sgt. Marc Tessier.

The family confirmed on social media that the body is that of Robert Chartrand, 30, who went through the ice while snowmobiling near the Chapeau bridge on Feb. 12.

“With great sadness and relief, our beloved Robert has finally been found,” Chartrand’s sister Andrea posted on Friday. “We would like to thank everyone for their continued love and support though this difficult time. Arrangements will be shared in the coming days.”

Several searches were conducted for Chartrand’s body with volunteers scouring multiple sections of the river. Another search had been scheduled for June 12 in Waltham.

A memorial fund in Robert’s name has been established to support future community sports and events. Donations can be made at the Caisse Populaire Dejardins in Chapeau (account #107171) or by e-transfer to robertchartrandmemorial@gmail.com
