Canada is celebrating the Platinum Jubilee marking Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s 70th anniversary on the throne.
To mark the historical milestone, MP Sophie Chatel is holding a contest honouring essential workers in the Pontiac.
“I wanted to give to anyone that supported their community, because we had a really tough two years, and the resiliency that I saw in our community is because of people that were there to support their community. And I want their gesture, their . . .
generosity, their leadership, their compassion to be rewarded,” said Chatel.
She wants to reward nurses, teachers, janitors and anyone who has made a difference in their community. The goal for Chatel is to be able to thank these people personally and to get to know their story, because it is these people who have gone beyond their job requirements to help out, she explained.
She chose to honour people in the Pontiac on the cusp of the Queen’s 70th anniversary, because it is a symbol to celebrate leadership in Canada. “When you work for your community, you work in making Canada better.”
To celebrate, Chatel will call the winners to the riding offices and will hand the pin herself since she was unable to socially open her offices due to the pandemic, she said. The winners will be announced at the end of April or beginning of May, she noted.
“This is a celebration of being better because of who we are together,” said Chatel.
If you know a person who has made significant contributions to the community during the pandemic, Chatel is asking that people nominate them for a chance to win a pin. “What I hope is that many people will participate and nominate people, because the idea is to motivate people to recognize their neighbor, to recognize their friend.”
To nominate an individual, send an email, including the nominee’s contact information, to Sophie.Chatel@parl.gc.ca by April 8, 2022, indicating why this person has made a remarkable difference.
