The MRC Pontiac added ‘Sugar Bush’ to their permanant art exhibition on Wednesday. The painting, by local artist Jelly Massee, depicts a familiar historical scene in sepia tones, of Rolland Demers collecting maple syrup with his horse and sled in the 1940’s. The painting was . . .
chosen by a committee of elected officials and citizens, and will be on permanent display at the MRC Pontiac in Campbell’s Bay.
Massee paints historical events, but not necessarily the big ones. “I paint every day, so I’m always painting the things around me,” she said. “I capture moments in history and things around me that aren’t necessarily events you’d read about in history books, but day-to-day events in people’s lives.”
The artwork is being acquired through a Creative Development Fund, which aims to invest in artists and address the challenges of the arts ecosystem in the MRC Pontiac by investing in their ability to focus on their art.
The ‘call to artists’ happens twice a year, in spring and fall, and the next acquisition process is expected to begin in April.
Jelly Massee will be featured in THE EQUITY next week.
