A new member joins the Western Quebec Literacy Council (WQLC) as the new executive director, building on the work the WQLC has done with the different programs they offer the community according to Greg Graham, educator and owner of Coronation Hall Cider Mills.

“Literacy is the key that unlocks the door to everything else,” said Graham.

The WQLC, a volunteer organization, offers free . . .

private lessons to people who want to improve their reading and writing skills and numerous other services for the community such as tutoring.

A manager of the Pontiac campus of Heritage College and a school board commissioner, Graham said education has always been important to him he believes providing community members with the resources the WQLC offers allows people to achieve their goals.

Always on the lookout for a new opportunity and a new challenge, when Graham saw the job posting in the paper he jumped at the opportunity, as he believes in the work the WQLC does. “You can’t get up every day just for a job, you have to believe in what you’re doing,” he told The Equity.

Graham explained the services do not stop at reading and writing, the organization also helps folks with numerical and computer literacy, “the concept of literacy has grown and the need for it has grown,” he said.

As Graham prepares to start his new position in the new year, he hopes that he can continue to build on what the organization is doing and increase volunteer participation and have more tutors get involved. “My hope is everybody knows the services that we can provide, and people know where they can reach out if they’re having difficulties getting assistance. I don’t want anybody to have to struggle with literacy issues alone because there are people out there and want to help.”
