Students at Pontiac High School gathered in their gymnasium on Friday afternoon for a sombre ceremony honouring Remembrance Day.
Members of the student council led the service, recounting several important battles in the Canadian military’s history, including Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele and Dieppe. After they were done, a video on Vimy Ridge was played, showing the students some of the horrors that the generations before them had endured. This past April marked the 100th anniversary of the historic battle.
Connor Stephens read a letter penned by Sgt. David L. Davies, relative of PHS librarian Jennifer Davies, to his wife while stationed in Holland at the end of WWII.

Principal Debra Stephens closed out the ceremony by thanking the students and staff that put the assembly together.
“I think we are incredibly fortunate to be a part of a school and community that really does take the time to remember what this day means,” she said. “If we don’t remember the past, we are in danger of repeating its mistakes.”
She encouraged the students to attend the services in their communities on Nov. 11 before dismissing them.
