Over 100 people came out to the R.A. Hall in Campbell’s Bay on Friday night, prepared for an evening of quick dabs and good times, all in memory of a local healthcare worker.
The annual bingo fundraiser was organized by Susan Smith of Campbell’s Bay, in honour of her sister Deborah, who was killed by a distracted driver on her way home from work in 2014.
“Her family would like to keep her memory alive,” Susan said. “This is the third bingo we’ve had. It’s one of our big fundraisers.”

Since Deborah was a nurse for over 20 years, working both in Shawville and at the Bonnechere Manor in Renfrew, Ont., Susan explained that the money raised by the family would go towards The Deborah Smith Scholarship Fund, a bursary for aspiring nurses in the Pontiac.
“We’ve given the money already to the schools, so they’re good for at least another five years,” Susan said, adding that students currently enrolled in nursing programs can also apply.
This year there are three recipients: Julia Lafleur, a graduate of École secondaire Sieur de Coulonge, second year nursing student Hollie Kingsbury and third year nursing student Shania Hodgins.
In addition to the bingo, there was a $400 wine basket that was raffled off, which was won by bingo caller Richard Gratton, who probably could have used a few sips to soothe his vocal cords.
In total, the night brought in $1,850.
