Over 30 seniors gathered at the Lions Hall in Bryson on Friday for a workshop on various forms of elderly abuse.
The event was a joint effort between the Pontiac Organization of Seniors and Retirees (POSR) and Juripop, a non-profit organization that aims to improve accessibility to legal aid.
Organizer Rachel Plamondon explained that the workshop provides a way for local seniors to get their questions answered by a range of experts in various fields, including a lawyer, a notary and an officer from the Sûreté du Quebec.
“The point of this is to educate seniors who might be vulnerable about abuse,” she said, explaining that abuse can take many forms, including physical, emotional and financial.
Those in attendance got a run-down on laws pertaining to a wide variety of subjects, such as wills, advance medical directives and inheritance planning.
Plamondon added that after presentations from the various experts, attendees got a chance to consult with them one-on-one about any issues they may be dealing with personally.
Lunch was organized by the Bryson Lions Club and a door prize featuring a selection of liquor was raffled off during the day. A second workshop was presented in French on Sept. 30 at the parish hall in Fort Coulonge.
