A supper to celebrate the history of fur traders in Canada was held at La Ferme Northfork on Saturday. Despite power outages in the area and the freezing weather, the dinner was a success, according to Caroline Pomeroy, the chef and organizer of the supper.
“We’re living in the Pontiac and we’re in the area that is so famous for fur traders, coureur de bois,” said Pomeroy. “I’ve just been so inspired by those men because they were legends. They were living the bravest and the toughest existence. And living off the land and being one with nature. It’s just it’s like a lost culture that, you know, it’s like when men were men. So I really wanted to pay homage to them.”
Pomeroy said she wanted to organize a traditional French Canadian meal which included pea soup, local ham, scallop potatoes, French Canadian baked beans and mini tourtière with sugar pie and pudding chomeur for dessert.
“I’ve tried to find the most traditional original French Canadian recipes,” said Pomeroy.
The dinner was also decorated with rustic themes and had traditional and other aspects to play up the fur trader theme.
Pomeroy concluded that she hoped to plan more themed events at La Ferme Northfolk in the future.
