I hope that everyone on the Ontario side had a safe and enjoyable long weekend. Despite the intense heat, it has been a great summer for swimming, boating, fishing golfing and other outdoor activities.
Last week, we spent three days camping with our family at Rideau Acres campground in Kingston. The weather was beautiful. We enjoyed swimming, playing games, sightseeing, shopping, relaxing, good food. and drinks. We took a ninety minute cruise on the Island Belle and toured a bit of Kingston, which has many attractions.
Larry and Mark took the Old Fort Henry tour, which is a UNESCO world heritage site. The stern and regimented life of soldiers was highlighted. Discipline was the order of the day, and there was a stark contrast between officers and regular soldiers. The defense of British controlled Canada was clearly the motivation for the building of Fort Henry. The establishment of this fort and the building of the Rideau canal from Kingston to Ottawa were considered essential defenses against military aggression from the south. However, the cannons were never fired in anger, and today, Fort Henry is a reminder of our past and caution for our future as Canada must always “stand on guard for thee”!
