The Anglican Young Women’s Association (AYWA) at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Shawville hosted its second chicken barbecue of the summer last week (Aug. 20), with support from the Shawville Lions Club.
The community feast has been a regular fundraiser for the church for at least 40 years, according to organizer Carolyn Meisner, who was also among the founding members of the AYWA group some 50 years ago.
She said a single supper usually raises between $2,000 to $3,000 dollars, which just goes towards general maintenance and paying for a priest.
“Every church needs money to keep going,” she said.
This year was the first in which the church received support from the Lions Club for doing the actual cooking of the chicken at both of its summer barbecues.
“Our chicken cookers got tired of it. It’s a long long time to stand out there. So one of our members asked the Lions Club and they said they were more than happy to do it,”
Meisner said, noting the AYWA members still take care of the sides and deserts.
She said all in, the dinner sold around 160 tickets.
