The Parti Québécois (PQ) has announced its candidate for the Pontiac riding in the upcoming provincial elections will be Marcela Cazas.
According to a statement Cazas issued on social media, she arrived in Quebec in 1985 from Bolivia, and worked for many years in the healthcare field.
“This political commitment was something I had never considered. But after being approached by party members and ultimately guided by my convictions, I realized it was the path for me,” she wrote in French.
She said in the statement that she is concerned about threats to the French language and the “erosion of [Quebec’s] cultural autonomy”, which is one of her reasons for joining the party.
THE EQUITY attempted to reach Cazas for an interview, but did not hear back in time for publication.
The PQ’s candidate in the previous election, Jolaine Paradis-Châteauneuf, finished in fourth place with 1,887 votes (6.65 per cent).
This fall’s elections are scheduled for Oct. 5. So far in the Pontiac riding, three-term incumbent André Fortin has been named as the Liberal candidate, Mariana Mefleh has been named as the CAQ candidate, Bianca Baldo has declared for Québec solidaire and Will Twolan is the candidate for the Canadian Party of Quebec.
