Vendors and shoppers gathered Saturday, July 3rd for the first municipality of Pontiac market of the season.

The market featured an array of different vendors. Art, produce, books, vegetables, as well as lunch was available for purchase onsite.

The Pontiac markets are organized by the Blés D’Or as a fundraiser for their club. The Blés D’Or is a seniors group based in the municipality of Pontiac. The club organizes social events such as dances, bingo nights, suppers and trips for their 126 members. This is the third year that the Blés D’Or have run a summer market to raise money for their many activities.

“Hopefully people will come out and support our seniors. Because, they do need to get out and have a social life,” said event co-organizer Jennifer Larose.

Victoria Mestre-Laurin, from Infinity Farm, believes the market helps encourage people to buy local and to create connections between artists, producers and citizens.

“I will be here even if there are no sales, it is just important to be here for the community,” said Mestre-Laurin.

As this was the first market of the summer and the first indoor market in the new Quyon community centre vendors suggested that these circumstances may have affected the overall turnout. However, vendors still seemed to be in good spirits as most of them were happy to be out and promoting their businesses, many of them for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

Sheila McCrindle, owner of Demeter Catering and vendor said, “it’s nice to be back in the community seeing familiar faces that we haven’t seen in a long time.”

The markets are held on the first Saturdays of each month until October with the location alternating between the Quyon and Luskville community centres.
