Can you pick out some familiar faces in this crowd?

Equity reader Shirley Green submitted this photo of a raucous night in Shawville in the early 1950s. A exhibition hockey match was set up between . . .

a group of local lads and ladies as a fundraiser.

“The team was put together as an entertainment night to raise funds for the agricultural hall,” she said. “Somebody thought up the idea, ‘Why don’t the women get a team together and take on the men.’

It was agreed that that would be a funny night for everybody and the men had to play with their arm pinned behind their back so they could only use their one good arm for the stick handling. We sold tickets and it was a huge success because everyone thought that we were crazy.”

If you have an old photo that you’d like to share in the paper, send it to editor@theequity.ca along with a brief description.
