SHAWVILLE Oct. 17, 2018
On Thursday night, Shawville United Church was packed with parishioners partaking in plates of pasta.
The ringleader of the volunteers, Allan Dean, explained that he and some of the fellas have been hosting this dinner for about four or five years.
“It’s all volunteers from the church,” he explained. “It’s to raise general funds for the church.”
Dean estimated that the crew of about ten served more than 100 people over the course of the evening.
In addition to spaghetti and sauce, they also had the sides covered with Caesar salad and garlic bread, plus cupcakes for dessert.
Dean explained that he had grown up in the church but had moved away from Shawville many years ago. When he returned to town about a decade ago, he picked up right where he left off. He said that many of the volunteers have been lifelong members of the United Church.
Like many other congregations across the country, Shawville United is dependant upon the generosity of its parishioners and the community at large.
“We enjoy it and try to do it once a year,” Dean said.
