In honour of Cindy Smiley, the Shawville Fair will be hosting a charity auction where all proceeds will go to her family’s charity of choice.

During her time serving on the Shawville fair board of directors, Smiley went to her fellow board members with the idea of having a charity auction as part of the fair. According to Mavis Hanna, Smiley organized every aspect of this event.

“It was her idea. It was her brainchild,” said Hanna, “she was the one who came to the board as the director with this idea to have a charity auction as part of the fair. So she basically looked after and arranged and did all the details for that 100 per cent.”

The first year the funds went to the Make A Wish Foundation. In the years since, through the charity auction Smiley was able to raise tens of thousands of dollars for charitable causes.

Smiley passed away in November 2021, so this year the fair board of directors would like to honour her memory by having a charity auction for the charity of her family’s choice, and honouring Smiley with the dedicated service award that will be awarded to her family.

The auction will take place on Thursday, September 2 at 7 p.m. as part of the fair’s opening ceremonies.
