March 5, 2019

On March 5, members of the local community gathered at St. Paul’s Anglican Church hall in Shawville for the annual observance of Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras.

Rev. Susan Lewis explained that the celebration marks the start of Lent, a period of 40 days leading up to Easter where observant Christians give up certain luxuries or commit acts of charity. It’s a commemoration of the story in the Bible where Jesus spends 40 days fasting in the desert.

In several countries, the day is marked by the consumption of all the sugars and fats in the pantry by cooking pancakes.

Rev. Lewis said that she would be taking on different acts of generosity throughout the next 40 days.
