On Monday, Jolie Folie in Shawville was packed for two sets of workshops on using smart phones and social media for business marketing. Put on by SADC Pontiac, the event was . . .

so popular that an extra afternoon session had to be added to accommodate more participants.

“It came as a request from our clients and it turned out to be incredibly popular,” said SADC business advisor Amy Taylor, who organized the event. “We sold out within two days and had to add a second edition and we’re going to do it again in the fall because it’s super popular.”

The sessions were taught by professional photographer Cindy Lottes and social media expert Cassidy Wagner of Paperback Events. Lottes focused on using proper lighting and other techniques that make photographs stand out. Wagner taught the attendees how to use their photos to maximum effect on their various social media pages.

Taylor said that participants were from a wide range of backgrounds, from ag-related businesses to crafters, municipal employees and more.

“It’s not our usual clients, it’s not the usual suspects that came to the event, so obviously we hit a need and we’re going to keep going with it,” she said, adding that they had 17 attend each session.

The next SADC workshop in the calendar is a bus trip to Shopify headquarters in Ottawa next week to learn the ins and outs of online business as well as targeting online shoppers with effective advertising. However, Taylor was very excited about their upcoming marketing workshop on March 12 with music industry veteran Steve Jones, called “The Rock Star Startup”.

“I’ve been doing this for 17 years and he was by far the most exciting keynote speaker I’ve ever heard,” she said. “It’s really cool.”
