A couple in Quyon is frustrated after their yard and basement filled with water on March 23 that has yet to be removed.

Beverly Stanley and her husband live in Quyon right off the intersection at Egan Street and Hwy. 148. For the last two weeks, the pair have been . . .

pumping water out of their basement to no avail, and have had their front and back lawns submerged. Stanley said the water from the rainfall the week the flooding began has been traveling from the highway into her basement.

“My yard is flooded and the water table is high,” she said. “They took a culvert out, the Ministry of Transport. There are no ditches here and when they took the culvert out, the water was up past Trudeau’s garage.”

Stanley said that she had contacted Municipality of Pontiac Mayor Joanne Labadie as well as the Ministry of Transport, but both were unable to provide assistance.

“The Ministry of Transport was up here and they didn’t do anything about it, I phoned the mayor and she didn’t do anything about it,” she said. “We can’t get the water out from our basement because it keeps running in because of the water table. We didn’t have water here before. We aren’t getting any help from anywhere.”

They had never had this issue before and blame this year’s damage on the removal of culvert. They dug a four-foot hole into their front yard to gauge the water levels, and the hole was filled with water. As far as they know, their home is the only one experiencing flooding.

They hired a plumber to visit the site, and he determined that the water was in fact running from the highway. A worker from the Ministry of Transport took a look at the waterlogged home and was also unable to recommend a solution.

“They were up here, they looked and they didn’t do nothing.”
