The Municipality of Pontiac released a notice on July 10 warning residents that there was a recent black bear sighting in the region.
The purpose of the notice is to . . .
keep citizens mindful of the potential presence of bears as well as what preventative steps people can take to avoid them, according to executive secretary Manon Papillon.
Papillon said in an email to THE EQUITY that the black bear sighting was around the area of Hwy. 148 and chemin Eardley-Masham, although this was over a week ago.
The notice encourages residents to take preventative measures so that there are no potential food sources for the bears. Sources of attraction include bird and squirrel feeders, barbecue grills, garbage and any other food left outdoors.
Typically, black bears are afraid of encounters with humans, so if someone sees one, they are advised to remain calm and shout.
