In the aftermath of the federal election, The Equity spoke to the conceding candidate to discuss their campaigns.

Gabrielle Desjardins, Bloc Québécois

“Despite the current pandemic context, these elections should not have taken place. Voters sent a clear message to the next government, and I hope it will be heard this time. I am glad about the results obtained.”

Michel Gauthier, Conservative Party of Canada

“I am satisfied with the campaign I’ve done because the way I did my campaign was by talking with people, talking with citizens of the Pontiac. I was not running against any other candidate. I was a candidate for the people before a candidate for a party. In my mind, I had to do a positive campaign and that’s what I’ve done. ”

Shaughn MacArthur, Green Party of Canada

“I’m super proud of the campaign we ran. I think it was the most aggressive, creative campaign the Greens ever put together in Pontiac and frankly I challenge anybody to name another candidate who paddled 150 km to bring attention to the urgency of the climate crisis. Here in Pontiac I think I was able to bring forward a message of optimism in what we can achieve if we think differently, if we do politics differently. I think we’ve built a foundation for future battles to build upon in the coming years.”

Denise Giroux, New Democratic Party

“I’m holding my head high, we did a good job on the issues as we always do. Of course, look at what the government has done – they gained all of maybe one seat, maybe two. It’s concerning that the status quo is what we get after [$600 million]. Tradition and loyalty to a party seem to be prevailing in this electoral system over arguments.”

David Bruce Gottfred, People’s Party of Canada

“It was very exciting. I sort of dropped right into this and didn’t know exactly how it was going to go. For any candidate in this riding, we got the highest vote total per dollar spent, we had the best ratio there. We did a lot better than we did last time, quite a lot better.”

James McNair and Geneviève Labonté-Chartrand of Canada’s Fourth Front Party and the Free Party Canada could not be reached  in time for publication.
