The schoolyard at Onslow Elementary in Quyon was alive with activity on Thursday night as the school’s home and school committee hosted its annual spring fair.
President Amanda MacKechnie said this is the committee’s second annual spring fair after taking over the event from the school. In addition to last year’s painting, bouncy castles and Quyon Lions BBQ, this year’s fair featured the entertainment of local silly-maker Echo the Clown, who made balloon animals for the kids to take home.
“Last year we got rained out early, so this year it’s perfect. The weather is really, really good. It’s a great turnout,” MacKechnie said.
At the end of the evening, all eyes turned toward a hanging pail filled with icy water for the event’s main attraction – a chance to soak school principal Cathy Nugent. Kids lined up, frothing at the mouth for a chance to launch a beanbag at the target and empty the bucket onto Nugent’s head. The second child in line managed to hit the target, kicking off a chain of at least five students who soaked their principal.
In addition to the fair, the committee held an auction in support of their activities. MacKechnie said the money from both the auction and the fair will be used to support other school events.
She said last year’s auction raised enough money to improve classrooms, and also paid for entertainment such as Mad Science, a reptile show, and a curling demonstration.
“We have also been able to give all the classrooms pizza parties, so the money is really well used,” MacKechnie said.
On Monday, MacKechnie said this year’s auction raised over $8,000.
