Farm Lake boat launch to close again this summer

Otter Lake’s boat launch at Farm Lake will be closed once again this summer to prevent the spread of the invasive Eurasian milfoil plant growing there and in five other lakes.

The Farm Lake boat launch will be closed again this summer due to Eurasian milfoil growth, the Municipality of Otter Lake announced on June 17.

The invasive species, which can reach full bloom during mid-June to mid-July, spreads in part by getting chopped up by boat propellers and being dispersed into other parts of the water body.

The municipality has closed the boat launch for parts of the past two summers as a way to slow the invasive plant’s spread, a strategy that will continue this year.

“Once the milfoil reaches the surface at the Farm Lake launch, the gate will be closed to incoming boats to prevent spreading,” reads the announcement from Otter Lake mayor Jennifer Quaile.

In April, Quebec’s environment ministry approved the municipality’s plan to place 7,000 sq. metres of tarp on the lakebed at the boat launch to try to choke out the plant.

Quaile said that the municipality has found a company that can deliver and place the tarps, but  the company was not able to deliver them this year in time before the milfoil’s growth became too high. The tarp strategy is most effective at the start of spring when the milfoil plants are still relatively small.

“Nobody was more disappointed than I was,” said Quaile in an interview about the delay, adding that council will still make the purchase of the tarps this year since the money has been set aside in the municipal budget. She expects the tarps to be laid down in the spring of 2027.

Most of the roughly $60,000 cost for the tarps will be covered by an FRR4 grant from the MRC Pontiac. The municipality will seek additional funding to cover the cost of divers to lay tarps and remove milfoil plants by hand in other sections of the lake.

Five other lakes in the municipality have been found to contain traces of Eurasian milfoil – Little Hughes Lake, Petit Lac Cayamant, McCuaig Lake, Otter Lake and Leslie Lake.

The municipality will soon begin working on applications for those lakes. Some lakes may require tarps, while others may require hand-pulling by divers.

In the meantime, the municipality has begun deploying buoys and signs across these lakes to alert the public of its presence.

Overall, Quaile said the delay has not changed the municipality’s strategy toward addressing the milfoil issue. “It means a setback for one more year,” she said.
