Unprecedented times call for revolutionary solutions to keep traditions alive.
For years, Onslow elementary school has honoured their graduates with a ceremony in the gymnasium. This year, school administrators and teachers were unsure if the pandemic health guidelines would allow for such a ceremony to take place. They were forced to think outside of the box in order to come up with a solution.
“Normally we would have had a proper ceremony in the gym and invite families, but because the rules changed so many times it was really hard for us to come up with our normal plan,” explained school secretary Wendy Wesley.
Seeing that the graduates needed something special for their big day, school bus driver Ray Kylbride and his wife Marlene Kylbride asked LaSalle bussing if they could use the school bus for a graduate parade.
On June 22, 2021, students and teachers cheered on the graduates as they boarded the decorated bus. From there the bus took them on a parade around town where they could wave at their friends and family from the bus.
The final stop was the Quyon fairgrounds where the students enjoyed a pizza lunch, and then were treated to ride on the Quyon ferry.
