The Carrefour Jeunesse-emploi du Pontiac held its annual general meeting on Thursday morning (June 25) at its office in Campbell’s Bay.

The Carrefour is a non-profit organization funded through a variety of grants from various levels of government with a focus on employment assistance, skills development and education, targeted at those 15 to 65 years of age. The Carrefour also partners with local schools and community organizations to offer a wide variety of training and assistance, everything from digital literacy skills to financial planning and assistance obtaining drivers licenses.

New director general Jessica Kelly explained that this is the first AGM following the departure of long-time director Karim El-Kerch, who left the organization in January.

“I know it was very difficult for him to leave, because he had given a lot of himself over the past eight years to the Carrefour, but he took a new position at La Relance, in Gatieneau which is quite a bit closer to home for him.”

Kelly, who has worked at the Carrefour in various capacities since 2011, served in an interim capacity for three months before becoming the permanent director. She said the new role was a lot to take in, but she was grateful for her time working with El-Kerch.

“I had already worked with Karim as coordinator on a lot of our projects so I was in the know on a lot of the files already,” she said. “That being said, there was definitely a lot of learning that happened [ . . . ] It’s been amazing to have the support of the whole team, the board while going through this transition.”

The staff presented their numerous projects and programs to the assembled partner organizations.

For their employment services (SAE), 60 per cent of the people who received support were over 35 years of age, with 61 per cent male, and 39 per cent female.

Kelly said that looking ahead, they have several initiatives in the works, including a podcast series with local entrepreneurs and engaged citizens to discuss local challenges and collaboration efforts. There is also a carpooling app in the works to assist with local collective transport.

This year the organization also hosted its fifth annual virtual job fair, which attracted more than 70 participants and 17 businesses and organizations. Kelly said that Carrefour is in the process of building curriculums on various subjects in collaboration with its education partners in order to teach a wide range of life skills.
