Between the hoots and the hollers coming from Mansfield’s Parc Amyotte ballfield, and the cheers from the stage, this year’s Mansfield en fête crowd brought the energy despite Saturday’s heat.

The weekend of family fun kicked off on Friday with the first games of the three-day ball tournament, live music and a DJ set.

The fun continued Saturday with a full day of activities for all ages – a bouncy castle, a candy bar and a foam party for kids, afternoon music for seniors from local long-term care homes, and a full lineup of country music to carry the crowd into the evening.

Opening the stage Saturday evening was one of Pontiac’s biggest bands of the summer – Les Carcajous du Nord, made up of five local teens with an affinity for French and English country hits that they played to the crowd’s delight. Other performers that evening included Rene Bertrand and Michaela Cahill, and the group Mish Mash. Final ball games early Sunday morning closed out the event.

The Mansfield-et-Pontefract fire department has been organizing this event for the past 25 or so years as a fundraiser for the department.

This year, the money raised from the canteen and bar will go towards paying off the new $120,000 rescue boat the department purchased to replace an older member of its fleet.

“With this rescue boat we’ll be responding as back-up for other municipalities as well, because many don’t have a rescue boat for the river,” said fire chief Pat Bertrand.

In years past, the fire department has charged a modest entry fee, but this year they made the festival free for all attendees.

“Money’s tight for everybody, the cost of living is so high. So we decided to make it free for everyone,” Bertrand said. “[This event] is to give the opportunity for the community to get together at least once a year. [ . . . ] It’s kind of a welcoming to the beginning of summer”.
