At last month’s council of mayors meeting, the MRC Pontiac announced the creation of a new . . .

sports and leisure committee.

According to the MRC Pontiac’s new Strategic Communications Advisor, Danielle Bélec, an Economic Development Officer responsible for sports and leisure who will work closely with Loisirs Sport Outaouais will form the committee, which will be composed of a councillor from each municipality.

Belec stated that the purpose of the initiative was to establish a structured and organized leisure service for the entire region. She added that the committee’s first order of business will be determining the quantity and quality of each municipality’s sports and leisure-related resources.

“The goal is to provide a guide … explaining who does what, what equipment exists and what kind of infrastructure do we have,” she said.

The initiative came as a response to a workshop, given to different municipalities earlier this year, about the importance of sports leisure in the territory, Belec said.

“They wanted to have a regional committee for the MRC [Pontiac],” she said.

As outlined in the MRC Pontiac’s strategic plan called “2020 Vision”, the release stated that council approved the establishment of the committee with the purpose of consolidating and improving socio-community, leisure and sports services in the Pontiac.

By the end of February, each municipality in the region should announce which of its councillors will represent the committee, Belec said.
