Last Friday, students from Dr. S.E. McDowell Elementary School collected trash off the streets of Shawville in honour of Earth Day.

Empty plastic containers, small electronics and abandoned masks found scattered throughout town were . . .

removed and placed in garbage bags handled by teachers and parent volunteers.

Potentially dangerous waste, such as construction materials, were left to the professionals.

Kaitlin Hearty, a French immersion teacher at McDowell Elementary, tackled Centre and Main Street with her class. “We’re trying to keep it to the local area towards the school, especially because it’s many of our children’s homes and it’s a part of their community,” she said.

Hearty’s students all shared the same excitement as they helped clean up the neighbourhood.

My daughter’s been talking about it all week,” said Natasha Beardsley, one of the parent volunteers. “The teachers have been really good to educate the children about what the purpose behind it is. The kids have been really excited knowing that they’re going to be able to do something that makes an impact.”
