Campbell’s Bay

June 13, 2019

On June 13, dozens of people gathered at the MRC office in Campbell’s Bay for the second annual volunteer recognition evening. The event is meant to recognize the contributions of volunteers from each of the 18 municipalities across the region, with each mayor and their council choosing the most deserving group or individual from their community.

Most of the awards were handed out by the local mayor or pro-mayor. At least one of the recipients had no idea that they were being recognized that evening.

Campbell’s Bay Mayor Maurice Beauregard recognized his Pro-Mayor Tim Ferrigan, who was sitting in the front row, but was unaware he would be the centre of attention. Ferrigan is heavily involved in community life in his municipality, from helping raise money for a local splash pad to putting summer fest together.

“Tim’s also pro-mayor,” Beauregard explained. “Council was able to make it a secret. We told him his father was receiving the award tonight.”

Ferrigan was overwhelmed by the award, and credited his father and others in the community for their dedication as well.

“It’s kind of a coincidence to use my dad to get me here because certainly I wouldn’t be involved in the community like I am if it wasn’t for him,” he said. “Growing up every night at the supper table it was just planning the next event.”

Two municipalities hit hard by the recent flooding, Waltham and Mansfield et Pontefract, chose to recognize all the volunteers that came to their aid this spring to fill sand bags, donate food or help out in other ways.

The award ceremony was followed by a reception catered by Café 349.
