Bringing families a fun-filled morning a local committee organized one of their famous Touch-a-Truck events this past Saturday after a two-year hiatus.

The Parents Voice is a committee of eight moms dedicated to planning events for families to enjoy with their kids.

Initially it was a group of moms looking for activities to do with their children and from there it grew.

They started planning creative movement classes, children’s gymnastics and musical groups at the library for moms and babies.

“The motto was to make Shawville an area that is a better place for families,” said Patti Moffatt one of the committee members.

After hearing about the event in Ottawa, parents wanted to replicate it in their town and in 2016 they organized their first Touch-a-Truck. “We’re always of the premise that if it can happen in the big city we can make it happen here too. And it was so much more successful than we ever imagined,” said Moffatt.

The event had about 25 different trucks and vehicles; from dump trucks to combine harvesters to sweepers and sawmills, and they had about 500 attendees.

When planning events they try to keep everything low cost or for free highlighted Moffatt, but also added that they are taking donations as a way to continue to be able to hold these events for the community.

“We were really lucky to have wonderful community support, that really helps keep us going. And then just a great group of parents that are really committed to making sure that our area has awesome things for families to do together,” said Alina Holmes, one of the committee members.
