As part of his campaign for the 2021 election, Pontiac Green candidate Shaughn McArthur began his “paddle for a liveable future” along the Gatineau River last Sunday.

In a press release, McArthur described the route of his journey as 150 kilometres, beginning in Maniwaki and ending in Ottawa on Sept. 6. Along the way, McArthur will stop in nearby communities to meet with community members in the riding.

“I’m interviewing for the job of being the representative of Pontiac people, and I’m willing to paddle 150 kilometres to show how hard I’m willing to work for those people,” said McArthur.

“I challenge the other candidates to recognize the urgency of the climate crisis, and the health and economic benefits of active transportation. I challenge them to paddle bike or walk as part of their campaigns, and our campaign will match them kilometre by kilometre.”

McArthur, a former canoe trip guide, noted that the journey would be “fueled by organic food produced in the Pontiac.” He invited anyone interested to join him for part of the trip or at any stops along the way.

“We’re going to be out there engaging in a different way, and hopefully that’s inspiring to a lot of people,” said McArthur.
