The Pontiac Lions Club held a golf tournament last Saturday at Mickey Creek Golf Club in Campbell’s Bay, bringing more than 50 golfers out to grace the green.
Participants also enjoyed a spaghetti dinner later in the night and a barbecue, with all proceeds from the event going towards the Lions Club.
Pontiac Lions Club President Frank Frost said that the club had not had any fundraisers since before the pandemic and that they’ve continued to pay all their usual fees during that time. “After two years, our funds were getting quite depleted,” said Frost.
Frost added that the tournament wasn’t for skill but instead to have participants enjoy themselves.
“Everybody is going out there to enjoy themselves and support the Lions,” said Shane Presley before he stepped onto the green. “As long as they’re hitting a ball, it’s a good time.”
The tournament was treated as poker golf, with players given cards before and after stepping onto the course. Winners were determined by who had the best hand at the end of the tournament.
More than 40 prizes were available for participants, with the first place prize being a weekend getaway at Saint-Patrice. Frost explained that all the prizes were donated by local businesses and that many golfers had come out to support the club.
“I’m not a great golfer, I’m just here… because the Lions Club supports so many,” said Campbell’s Bay Mayor Maurice Beauregard at the event.
Frost explained that the event proceeds will help the Lions continue with their usual fees and that they hope to get more involved with helping the community in the coming months.
“Without the Lions Club, a lot of people in need wouldn’t get help,” said Beauregard. “It’s important to help them help others.”
